3D Gens kicked off 2025 with a training session for 20 final-year students from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), providing hands-on exposure to two of the most industrially significant additive manufacturing technologies: industrial 3D scanning and 3D metal printing.
Starting the Year with Purpose
Beginning the year with a training programme for graduating students is a fitting way to open. UTHM final-year students are on the threshold of entering the workforce — a moment when practical, industry-relevant skill exposure has direct and immediate career value. The training was designed to prepare participants for the realities of the digital manufacturing industry, not just introduce them to it.
What the Training Covered
Industrial 3D scanning and 3D metal printing are complementary technologies that together represent a complete digital manufacturing loop — scanning enables reverse engineering and inspection; metal printing enables production of complex, high-performance components.
3D Scanning sessions gave participants hands-on experience with professional scanning systems, covering setup, calibration, scan execution, and data processing. Students learned not just how to operate the equipment but how to interpret the outputs and apply them to engineering problem-solving.
3D Metal Printing sessions introduced participants to Powder Bed Fusion technology — machine operation, safety protocols, process parameters, and the quality considerations specific to metal AM. For most participants, this was their first direct engagement with industrial metal printing equipment.
Building Future Technopreneurs
The goal of the training extended beyond technical skill transfer. 3D Gens sees engineering graduates as future technopreneurs — individuals who will not just work within established industries but create new applications, businesses, and capabilities. Exposure to cutting-edge manufacturing technologies early in a career shapes how an engineer thinks about problems and what solutions they consider possible.
