A hands-on workshop held at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM) brought together surgeons from Indonesia to explore the digital workflow and 3D printing applications that are transforming modern surgical planning. The session was designed not just to introduce technology, but to build genuine confidence and transferable skills for surgeons who regularly face complex cases.
Why Digital Workflow Matters in Surgery
Surgical planning has traditionally relied on 2D imaging — X-rays, CT scans viewed on flat screens, and the surgeon's spatial reasoning to translate those images into a three-dimensional understanding of a patient's anatomy. This works, but it is cognitively demanding and leaves room for uncertainty in especially complex reconstructive or implant cases.
Digital workflow changes the equation. CT scan data can be converted into accurate 3D models, allowing surgeons to visualise, manipulate, and plan on a virtual representation of the actual patient's anatomy. When that model is then 3D printed, surgeons can hold and handle the anatomy physically — rehearsing procedures, checking implant fit, and communicating with patients and teams in ways that 2D imaging cannot support.
Building Confidence, Not Just Capability
The workshop with the Indonesian surgical team was intentionally practical. Surgeons who attend a demonstration leave knowing what is possible; surgeons who participate in a hands-on session leave knowing what they themselves are capable of. The PPUM format was designed to achieve the latter.
Participants worked through the digital workflow from imaging data to 3D model, explored printed anatomical guides and surgical planning models, and engaged with 3D Gens' medical team on the application of these tools to real case scenarios.
Regional Knowledge Transfer
Workshops like this carry significance beyond the individual participants. Surgeons who return to their institutions with new knowledge and confidence become advocates and educators within their own teams — extending the reach of the technology training many times over.
