3D Gens and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) have taken a formal step toward collaborative innovation with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement focuses on advancing 3D printing and biomedical device development — an area where the combination of 3D Gens' manufacturing capabilities and UNIMAS's research expertise creates significant potential.

A Formal Commitment to Innovation

MoUs are significant because they signal intent and establish a structured framework for collaboration. For 3D Gens and UNIMAS, this agreement formalises a shared commitment to applying additive manufacturing to biomedical challenges — from research-stage device concepts through to functional prototypes and, eventually, clinically applicable products.

Sarawak has a particular stake in advancing biomedical technology locally. With a geographically dispersed population and a healthcare system that serves communities across diverse terrain, innovations in medical device manufacturing have the potential to make a direct and meaningful impact on patient outcomes.

The Scope of Collaboration

Under the MoU, both organisations will work together on research and development activities that leverage 3D printing for biomedical applications. This includes exploring materials suitable for medical-grade manufacturing, developing device designs optimised for AM processes, and building shared knowledge in regulatory and quality considerations for medical devices.

UNIMAS brings established research infrastructure and a community of postgraduate students and academics working at the intersection of engineering and medicine. 3D Gens contributes its operational AM systems, process knowledge, and experience in producing patient-specific and medical-grade parts.

Moving Towards a Smarter, Healthier Future

The collaboration between 3D Gens and UNIMAS represents the kind of partnership that moves Malaysia forward on both the technology and healthcare fronts simultaneously. By grounding innovation in real clinical and research needs, the MoU creates a pathway from laboratory concept to patient benefit.
