3D Gens has officially kicked off a project with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), Malaysia's national rail operator — extending its industrial additive manufacturing expertise into the rail sector through the deployment of 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies tailored specifically for locomotive applications, and the establishment of a dedicated Digital Lab.
KTMB: A National Institution Embracing Change
KTMB has operated Malaysia's rail network for decades, connecting peninsular communities and underpinning important segments of the national freight and passenger transport system. Like many legacy infrastructure operators, KTMB faces the ongoing challenge of maintaining aging rolling stock with parts that may no longer be readily available from original equipment manufacturers.
Digital manufacturing technologies offer a direct and practical response to this challenge. 3D scanning enables KTMB engineers to capture precise geometry of worn or damaged components, creating accurate digital records for inspection, measurement, and reverse engineering. 3D printing then allows fabrication of replacement components, tooling, jigs, and fixtures — either for direct use or as patterns for traditional manufacturing processes. The combination reduces dependency on long import lead times, accelerates maintenance cycles, and builds internal technical capability.
Setting Up the Digital Lab
Beyond supplying technology, 3D Gens was involved in establishing the Digital Lab environment at KTMB — ensuring the physical space, workflows, and safety protocols are aligned with the demands of rail engineering applications. Hands-on training was conducted to ensure KTMB's technical team could operate the equipment confidently and independently from day one.
This is not a one-time delivery — it is the beginning of an embedded capability that will grow as KTMB's team gains confidence and experience with the technology.
